The UNESCO Chair participates in the Forum (Documenting Extremist Crimes in Iraq) at the al-Abbas’s Holy Shrine.
The UNESCO Chair for Interfaith Dialogue at the University of Kufa participated in the first specialized forum (Documenting extremist crimes in Iraq: its methods, mechanisms, and challenges), whose activities began on Monday morning (March 28, 2022).
It was established by the Iraqi Center for Documentation of Extremist Crimes of the al-Abbas’s Holy Shrine, in cooperation with the Mullah al-Kabir Research Center/Koya University. The forum was held in Imam Hassan Hall (peace be upon him) at the al-Abbas’s Holy Shrine in the presence of religious and academic figures from various sects.
The participation of the UNESCO Chair for Dialogue in our university came through the research paper presented by the Chair’s Director, Dr. Alaa Shatnan, entitled (The United Nations strategy for documenting extremist crimes in Iraq…the two crimes of Speicher and Badoush prison as an example), which touched on the United Nations strategy for investigating crimes committed by ISIS gangs through the formation of a team called the International Investigation Team UNITAD, which was formed according to a resolution Security Council No. 2379 (2017), which is still working in Iraqi territory, in cooperation with the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice, to investigate crimes committed by ISIS terrorist gangs, genocide and mass graves, and to send reports every six months to the United Nations. The paper then touched on the latest findings of the team in documenting the Speicher crimes and the Badoush prison.
It is noteworthy that the forum aims to exchange experiences, unify and combine efforts to document extremist crimes to which the Iraqi people, with all its components, were exposed, adopt scientific methods to document extremist crimes, follow the correct mechanisms, learn about the most prominent challenges facing documentation operations, and suggest ways to overcome them.
