UNESCO Chair Participates in International Francophonie Day

Dr. Alaa Shatnan, Director of the UNESCO Chair, took part in the celebration organized by the French Department at the College of Languages at the University of Kufa on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, to mark International Francophonie Day. In his speech, Dr. Shatnan discussed the history of the establishment of International French Language Day, initiated by UNESCO, in conjunction with the International Day of Francophonie, which commemorates the Niamey Convention signed on March 20, 1970, marking the founding of the International Francophonie Organization.

He then spoke about the history and objectives of the Francophonie Organization and highlighted the current status and importance of the French language and its global spread today. He also touched on the University of Kufa’s membership in the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), which was facilitated by the UNESCO Chair in 2023, emphasizing the importance of the developmental and training projects provided by the agency to the University of Kufa.
