The UNESCO Chair Participates in an International Symposium

Dr. Alaa Shatnan, Director of the UNESCO Chair for Interreligious Dialogue at the University of Kufa, participated in an international symposium organized by Al-Alamein Institute on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The event featured Professor Constance Arminjon, a French historian and faculty member at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris, specializing in Islamic history and thought. The symposium was attended by several professors from the University of Kufa and Al-Alamein Institute for Graduate Studies.

In her lecture, the French scholar addressed various topics, including the history of Shia Islam, which has been the focus of her 20-year research career. Her work has centered on Islam, reform, and renewal in modern Shia thought. The culmination of this research is reflected in four books she has authored in French: Shia and the State (2013), Human Rights in Shia Islam (2017), A Brief History of Contemporary Islamic Thought (2017), and Towards a New Theology in Islam (2022).

The symposium concluded with an in-depth discussion between the participating professors and the French scholar, focusing on the themes of reform and renewal in Islamic thought across various fields.
