The working session focused on engaging UNESCO Chairs in enhancing the protection of World Heritage in Africa. Discussions highlighted the potential roles that UNESCO Chairs in African universities can play in developing effective initiatives for capacity-building in safeguarding African World Heritage. Additionally, the session explored the unique expertise and contributions that UNESCO Chairs can offer in fostering local leadership and innovation in heritage conservation efforts. The discussions also addressed how UNESCO and its Chairs can strengthen the capacities of African heritage institutions and ensure equitable opportunities for professional development.
Furthermore, the session covered topics related to cultural properties and heritage, with an emphasis on combating the illicit trafficking of cultural and heritage assets, raising awareness of restitution claims, and enhancing the role of museums. It also examined ways to integrate education and awareness on these issues into undergraduate and graduate curricula, actively engaging students in critical discussions. Additionally, participants explored how academic partnerships, scholarships, and collaborations with museums can enhance knowledge transfer and heritage preservation.
