UNESCO Chair Participates in an International Worksing session on “Harnessing Modern Technologies for Sustainable Development and AI Ethics”

Dr. Alaa Shatnan, Director of the UNESCO Chair, participated in an international online working session on “Harnessing Modern Technologies for Sustainable Development in Africa and AI Ethics,” organized by UNESCO with the participation of UNESCO Chairs from various universities and international institutions.

The working session took place on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 14:00 to 15:30 Paris time.

The session focused on enhancing knowledge production regarding emerging technologies for sustainable development in Africa, with a special emphasis on the implementation of the Africa Flagship Program 4.

During the working session , participants discussed ways to empower Africa in the governance of technology, digital ethics, and the responsible development of new and emerging technologies. They also explored the role of research in advancing artificial intelligence, quantum and nanosciences, biotechnology, and technical innovation to promote sustainable development in Africa and bridge the technological gap with the Global North.

The participants emphasized the importance of UNESCO’s collaboration with UNESCO Chairs and regional and global networks to mobilize efforts for implementing the African Union’s continental strategy on artificial intelligence and supporting capacity-building for underrepresented groups. They also discussed UNESCO’s role in fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors, developing policies, and strengthening connections between academia, industry, and policymakers for responsible technological innovation in Africa.

UNESCO aims to enhance digital capabilities and establish research networks for Africa, with a focus on ensuring inclusive access to digital services, governance, technologies, and education. This includes implementing recommendations on AI ethics and strengthening digital innovation capabilities.
