A Scholarly Seminar on the UNESCO Chair Publication: “The Chronicle of Violence in Iraq over Four Decades”

Dr. Hassan Zuhair Al-Sarraf, a member of the UNESCO Chair Office, participated in a scholarly seminar organized by the National Forum Association for Thought and Culture Research in Najaf Al-Ashraf on Friday, April 11, 2025. The seminar was held to discuss the book “The Chronicle of Violence in Iraq over Four Decades”, published as part of the “Intellectual Studies Series” by the UNESCO Chair at the University of Kufa.
The event hosted the book’s author, researcher Dr. Ahmed Hameed, who presented an overview of his methodology in composing the book. He delivered an analytical and critical reading of Iraqi fiction over the past decades, clarifying in his lecture that he focused on studying Iraqi novels specifically in relation to the theme of violence, covering the period from 1960 to 2003. He adopted the Marxist critical approach in his analysis, particularly the genetic structuralism of the French literary theorist Lucien Goldmann, which itself is a development of Georg Lukács’ theory of reflection.
Dr. Ahmed Hameed explained that the Iraqi novel, much like its Western counterpart, follows ideological patterns and tendencies, and is categorized according to the orientations of its authors.
The session concluded with audience remarks and a ceremony honoring the researcher.
