As part of efforts to raise awareness about the democratic process in Iraq—given its vital role in promoting social security, justice, and equality—members of the UNESCO Chair office, including Assistant Lecturer Alia Abdullah, Razan Al-Sultanny, and Taif Raheem, took part in an awareness workshop on the importance of participating in the electoral process. The workshop was held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, within the framework of Iraq’s Third National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security.
The event was organized by the Women’s Affairs Division, in collaboration with the Center for Continuing Education, and featured a lecture by Assistant Professor Dr. Radwan Hassan Ali Al-Mousawi.
Elections are considered one of the most vital expressions of democracy, enabling citizens to freely voice their opinions and choose their representatives in government institutions. However, the success of any electoral process hinges not only on its organization but also—crucially—on citizens’ awareness of the importance of active participation, starting from updating voter registration records to casting their votes on election day.
The workshop aimed to foster public awareness about the significance of updating voter ID data and to encourage active civic engagement in elections as a core expression of democratic practice and national responsibility.
In his opening remarks, the lecturer provided a comprehensive overview of the electoral process and its essential role in building state institutions and upholding democratic principles. He emphasized that updating voter cards is a crucial step in ensuring the integrity of elections, the accuracy of electoral rolls, and in preventing errors or duplication.
