The UNESCO Chair for Inter_Religious Dialogue participated in the conference entitled “The Genocide of the Kurdish People and Its Reflections in Literature, Art, and Media”, convened in the city of Sulaymaniyah on 25–26 August 2025. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and Youth and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kurdistan Region.
On behalf of the UNESCO Chair, Dr. Raed Abee delivered a paper titled “The Genocide of the Kurdish People in United Nations Reports: Between Media Discourse and Documentation.” The paper highlighted the necessity of critically analyzing UN reports to uncover the documentary methodology employed in tracing the violations committed against the Kurds, and in classifying the injustices they endured as crimes against humanity. Particular emphasis was placed on the significance of the documents revealed after the fall of the former regime, which strengthened the evidentiary basis for these crimes.
The participation of the UNESCO Chair in such a conference reflects its commitment to raising awareness of these atrocities in order to prevent their recurrence. It further aims to reinforce national unity, promote respect for diversity, and foster inclusive dialogue among Iraq’s communities, while underlining the importance of building on past experiences of crisis management, reconciliation, and the pursuit of peaceful coexistence across the spectrum of Iraqi society.
