“The UNESCO Chair convenes a symposium in commemoration of Media and Information Literacy Week.”

In observance of the Global Week for Media and Information Literacy, the UNESCO Chair for Dialogue—

in cooperation with the Department of Media at the University of Kufa—

held on 31 October 2025 an online symposium entitled

“Media and Information Literacy and Its Role in Fostering Coexistence.”

A number of researchers and academics specializing in media and educational studies took part in the event.

In the symposium, Dr. Amani Maytham al-Rubai‘i spoke about media and information literacy as a means of confronting misinformation and disinformation.

The second axis featured Dr. Hussein Htaimi, who addressed the role of digital media education in promoting peaceful coexistence.

The session was moderated by UNESCO Chair member Dr. Zainab Haider al-Rikabi.

The symposium sought to illuminate the profound importance of media and information literacy in cultivating a critical awareness capable of curbing the spread of extremist discourse and deceptive content.

It aspired to anchor the values of tolerance, acceptance of the Other, and social understanding—

thereby fortifying a culture of peaceful coexistence in both digital and physical spheres.

It further aimed to nurture critical thinking and to enhance the community’s skills in verifying information, contributing to the formation of a responsible, knowledge-aware public capable of navigating the vast and ever-accelerating currents of contemporary media and information flows.
