Tangible Heritage as a Bridge to Peace: An Academic Symposium at the University of Kufa Bringing Together Iraq’s Social Mosaic

The UNESCO Chair, in cooperation with the College of Archaeology at the University of Kufa, and with active participation from faculty members of the University of Mosul and the team of La Maso Organization for Culture, organized a specialized academic symposium entitled “The Importance of Tangible Heritage in Enhancing Opportunities for Peace and Peaceful Coexistence among Iraq’s Components.”

The symposium was held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in the College of Archaeology Hall at the University of Kufa.

The event was marked by a distinctive religious and social diversity, bringing together Muslims and Christians, alongside the participation of popular committees concerned with safeguarding cultural heritage in the holy city of Najaf. The symposium was attended by the Dean of the College and his scientific and administrative assistants, as well as a select group of University of Kufa professors, intellectuals, and sculptors from the Najafi cultural milieu.

The proceedings unfolded within an atmosphere of rigorous academic dialogue and in-depth interventions, focusing on the investment of Iraq’s archaeological and heritage identity as a vital bridge for community communication and social cohesion. The event concluded with the Dean of the College awarding certificates of appreciation to the participating researchers and to the UNESCO Chair member, Mr. Raed Abis, who chaired the session, in recognition of their efforts in enriching cultural dialogue and in supporting the values of peace and constructive dialogue among the diverse components of Iraqi society.
